Valheim Multiplayer Not Working: Fix Failed to Connect & Can't Join Friends

Last Update: 09/10/2026

Quickly Reduce Game Lag and Ping!

Boost FPS for Smoother Gameplay!

Your friend's Valheim server is running, but you keep getting the “Failed to connect” message. The join code may stop working, or you finally enter the world only to encounter interaction delays and disconnects. Players have reported that servers lose their PlayFab lobby registration even though the server process itself remains online — so an “online” status does not always mean that friends can actually connect.

Fix 1: Try Co-op Helper from LagoFast for Valheim Multiplayer Connection Issues on PC

If your PC group can't connect to the host, Co-op Helper from LagoFast offers a virtual LAN option for cooperative play. The host creates a room, and friends join it using the Room ID.

The idea is to create a shared virtual network between the participating PCs. Therefore, it can be useful when the normal connection method cannot reach the host. Everyone must still have compatible game versions, and the connection must be made to an active Valheim world.

Create a Room and Invite Friends

1. Open LagoFast and find Valheim.

2. Open Game Tools and select Co-op Helper.

3. In the Valheim Virtual LAN Co-op window, select Valheim from the drop-down list.

4. The host clicks Create Room and completes the setup.

5. Send the Room ID to your friends.

6. Each friend opens the same tool, enters this ID in the Enter Room ID field, and clicks Join Now.

The Create Room function is marked VIP, so check whether your account has the required access before organizing the session.

Launch the Valheim World

Connecting to the helper tool room creates a network session. However, the actual game session still needs to be launched separately:

  1. The host launches Valheim, selects the required world, enables Start Server, and loads it.
  2. Open Tutorial in Co-op Helper and follow the instructions for connecting to this world from inside Valheim.
  3. When prompted, friends enter the world password.
  4. The helper should remain running during the game. If the world is hosted through the game itself, the host must also remain in the session.

Do not confuse these three things:

Where it is used

Enter Room ID field in LagoFast

If the instructions use a local or virtual LAN address, apply this method with Crossplay disabled on a server where everyone is playing through Steam. The Valheim crossplay system does not accept connections through local or loopback IP addresses.

If everyone has joined the helper room but still can't join the server, continue below. The remaining issue may be related to the game's connection mode, version, or server configuration.

Fix 2: Use the Connection Method That Matches the Crossplay Setup

A local address, public server address, and crossplay join code are not interchangeable.

Everyone Is Playing Through Steam

If you are using the virtual LAN connection described above:

  1. Stop the current host session.
  2. Disable Crossplay before launching the world again.
  3. Follow the Co-op Helper instructions for the correct game connection address.

For a dedicated server, disabling crossplay means removing the -crossplay argument from the launch command and then restarting.

Switching to the Steam network backend also changes the network requirements. A dedicated server accepting direct connections over the internet generally needs the configured ports to be forwarded; the default port range for Valheim is 2456–2457.

Your Group Includes Xbox or Other Platforms

Keep Crossplay enabled and use Valheim's built-in connection system:

  1. The host starts the server and opens the pause menu.
  2. Copies the current Join code.
  3. Friends open Join Game → Add server and enter this code.
  4. When prompted, they enter the server password.

These are the connection steps described in the official Crossplay FAQ. A LagoFast Room ID cannot replace the in-game crossplay join code.

Fix 3: Check PlayFab If the Valheim Join Code Is Not Recognized

Use this solution if a previously working server suddenly becomes unavailable to multiple players, especially when using crossplay.

In the logs of one server, a player saw that the join code was created, followed a few seconds later by these lines:

PlayFab find lobbies failed: /Lobby/FindLobbies: ServiceUnavailable
Deactivated PlayFab lobby

Other players in the same discussion also reported that connecting through the public IP did not work. This points more toward a problem with the lobby registration service rather than simply an incorrectly entered code.

  1. Check the PlayFab service status, especially Lobby, Matchmaking, and Party.
  2. If there is an active incident, wait for the service to be restored before changing anything in the game installation.
  3. After the service is restored, ask the host to restart the session and provide a new join code.
  4. If the error continues, ask the server administrator to check for the messages shown above.

PlayFab recorded an increased number of Lobby and Matchmaking API errors on September 9, 2026; later, the incident was marked as resolved on the status page. This is a reason to check the current service status, not proof that every current Valheim multiplayer connection issue has the same cause.

Reinstalling Valheim will not restore an unavailable matchmaking service.

Fix 4: Update the Game on Both Sides and Check the Connection Without Outdated Mods

Use this solution if the connection stopped working after an update, you see a version mismatch message, or only a modded server rejects the connection.

Updating your copy of the game does not automatically update the game on your friend's computer or a separately installed dedicated server. Mods add another compatibility requirement: Iron Gate has separately warned that existing mods may not work after the release of version 1.0.

  1. Close Valheim on all participating PCs.
  2. Install all available game updates and compare the displayed version numbers.
  3. If you are using a dedicated server, ask the administrator to update it separately.
  4. Make sure everyone is using the same release branch.
  5. For modded sessions, check that the required server-side and client-side mods support the installed game version.

If compatibility is still unclear, test a mod-free session using a temporary world and character. Keep your current saves.

If this session works, troubleshoot the mod set first before changing network settings again. A virtual LAN cannot make incompatible game or mod versions communicate correctly.

Fix 5: Find Out Why Only One Friend Is Being Rejected

If everyone else can join, focus on the affected player and the host's access settings.

  1. Make sure the player is using the current address or join code and entering the correct password.
  2. Check whether Windows Firewall allows the corresponding Valheim application to communicate over the network being used.
  3. On a dedicated server, ask the administrator to check the bannedlist.txt and permittedlist.txt files.

If the permitted player list is not empty, access will only be available to players listed there. The administrator must use the correct Platform User ID, rather than assuming that the character name is enough to grant access.

If this player can join another server, the configuration of the original server should be checked more carefully.

Fix 6: Troubleshoot Desynchronization After Successfully Joining

If your friends can enter the world but movement, combat, or interactions begin to become out of sync, check the connection under simpler conditions.

Players discussing multiplayer around the release of version 1.0 described recurring desynchronization even though other online games worked normally for them. Responses also reported improvements after switching from Wi-Fi to Ethernet or disabling background streaming.

  1. Run a test with only the host and one friend.
  2. If possible, use Ethernet and pause large downloads and uploads.
  3. Compare an open area with the location where the problem usually occurs.
  4. Add the remaining players one at a time.

Pay attention to exactly what changes: if problems begin when a specific player joins, check that player's connection specifically. If they mainly occur near a large base and also happen in single-player, the cause may be local performance.

After using Co-op Helper, repeat the same session with the same players and in the same location. The ability to connect, maintain the connection, and interact normally is the useful criterion for determining whether things have actually improved.
