WARDOGS Game Executable Not Found: How to Fix the Steam Playtest “Missing Executable” Error

If Steam shows:

“An error occurred while launching this game: Missing game executable”

or:

“WARDOGS Playtest: Game executable not found”

do not rush to reinstall Windows or Easy Anti-Cheat, or download start_protected_game.exe from a third-party website.

Recent WARDOGS player reports show that this error had a very specific cause: Steam granted access to the Playtest even though the Playtest build itself had not yet been published. Some players received only a 5-byte placeholder, clicked Play, and Steam naturally could not find the game executable. Many players reported the same situation between August 27 and September 2.

The situation has now changed. WARDOGS Closed Beta 02 runs from September 3 at 18:00 UTC to September 6 at 08:00 UTC, and the actual Playtest files have now been released. According to community reports from September 2, the placeholder was replaced with a download of approximately 47 GB.

Therefore, the first thing to check is not your antivirus, but what Steam has actually installed.

Why Does WARDOGS Show “Game Executable Not Found”?

There are currently three different situations that can lead to a similar result:

This distinction is important because reinstalling the 5-byte placeholder will simply give you the same 5-byte placeholder again.

Fix 1. Make Sure You Are Launching WARDOGS Playtest

There are currently two different entries for WARDOGS in Steam:

• WARDOGS
• WARDOGS Playtest

WARDOGS Playtest is used for Closed Beta 02.

The regular version of WARDOGS will enter Steam Early Access on September 10.

Therefore, if you pre-ordered and Steam suddenly shows two entries, do not assume that the regular WARDOGS client is the beta.

For the current test:

Steam Library → WARDOGS Playtest → Install / Play

A pre-order guarantees access to Closed Beta 02, while free Playtest requests are accepted in waves.

Fix 2. Check Whether Your WARDOGS Playtest Is Still Just a Placeholder

This is the most important fix for the current WARDOGS Missing Game Executable Error.

Players who received Playtest invitations before the new build was ready reported downloads of only 5 bytes. After that, Steam showed errors such as:

and paths such as:

Steam\steamapps\common\WARDOGS Playtest\start_protected_game.exe

The executable was not “deleted.” Steam simply never downloaded the actual game files in the first place.

Check the Installation Size

1. Open Steam.

Players reported that the correct Beta files became available on September 2, when the download increased from the placeholder to tens of gigabytes.

If your installation still shows only a few bytes today, Steam is not yet using the current Playtest content.

Fix 3. Steam Still Looks for start_protected_game.exe After the Full Download

This is a different problem.

The current WARDOGS Playtest configuration was updated on September 3 and now uses WardogsLauncher-Shipping.exe as the default launch executable.

Therefore, if Steam has downloaded the current Beta 02 build but still gives an error and specifically looks for:

start_protected_game.exe

your Steam client may still have old Playtest launch information or incomplete local data.

Do the following:

1. Completely close Steam.
2. Restart Steam.
3. Right-click WARDOGS Playtest.
4. Select Properties → Installed Files.
5. Click Verify integrity of game files.
6. Let Steam download anything it finds missing.
7. Restart Steam again.
8. Launch WARDOGS Playtest from your library.

Do not manually create an empty start_protected_game.exe.

Do not download someone else’s WARDOGS executable.

Steam should install the executable belonging to your current Playtest build.

Fix 4. Clear Steam Download Cache if Your Playtest Is Still in the Old State

If Steam continues to show the wrong download size or refuses to obtain the current client:

1. Open Steam.
2. Go to Settings → Downloads.
3. Select Clear Download Cache.
4. Log back into Steam.
5. Open WARDOGS Playtest.
6. Check for the full download again.
7. After installation, verify the game files.

This is especially relevant if you received a Playtest invitation around August 27–31, when many players were already being accepted even though the previous test had ended and the next build was not yet available.

These invitations caused significant confusion because Steam told players that the Playtest could be installed even though the download did not yet contain a playable client.

Fix 5. Reinstall the Playtest, Not the Main WARDOGS Game

Do this only after confirming that Beta 02 is active and Steam should actually be delivering the real files.

1. Uninstall WARDOGS Playtest.
2. Completely close Steam.
3. Restart Steam.
4. Find WARDOGS Playtest in your library.
5. Install it again.
6. Make sure it is a full installation comparable to the actual game size, not just a few bytes.

8. Launch the game.

Do not remove and reinstall the unreleased retail WARDOGS entry hoping that it will fix the Playtest.

These are different Steam clients.

Fix 6. The Game Is Fully Installed, but the Executable Is Actually Missing

If the WARDOGS Playtest folder contains tens of gigabytes of game files, but the expected launcher is genuinely missing, then it makes sense to check your local security software.

Open:

Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Protection history

Look for anything related to:

• WARDOGS;
• WardogsLauncher-Shipping.exe;
• the WARDOGS Playtest folder.

If Windows Security or another antivirus has quarantined a legitimate file from your Steam installation, restore it only after confirming that it belongs to your official Steam copy, then run Verify integrity of game files again.

This should be a later troubleshooting step, not the first one. Recent widespread reports were primarily caused by the Playtest content state rather than dozens of players independently losing the same executable.

WARDOGS Now Launches, but Elytra Shows an Error?

If Steam no longer says Game executable not found, but the current beta stops at Elytra, then you have already passed the missing-executable stage.

Closed Beta 02 introduced a newer WARDOGS launcher/Elytra setup, and on September 3 players reported issues where the Elytra service could not install or initialize correctly.

The first player-confirmed step is to repair the built-in Elytra installation:

1. Open Steam.
2. Right-click WARDOGS Playtest.
3. Select Manage → Browse local files.
4. Open the Elytra folder.
5. Run Elytra-Setup.exe.
6. Select Repair.
7. Restart Windows.
8. Launch WARDOGS Playtest again.

Several Beta 02 players reported that repairing or reinstalling Elytra from the game’s own folder allowed the launcher to continue starting.

Do not download Elytra from random third-party websites.

Do Not Disable Windows Security Just to Fix “Missing Executable”

Some current community discussions recommend disabling Smart App Control or other Windows security mechanisms to bypass Elytra errors.

That is a separate issue.

and your WARDOGS Playtest installation is only a few bytes, disabling Windows security will not help — the executable was never downloaded in the first place.

Always resolve the Steam content problem first.

The current Playtest configuration has moved to the WARDOGS launcher and no longer relies on this old missing path.

The executable error is gone, but Elytra does not work

Run the Elytra-Setup.exe repair from the WARDOGS Playtest folder.

You are trying to launch the regular WARDOGS instead of Playtest
