If you're diving into the rich world of Last Epoch, you're likely drawn in by its complex class system, build variety, and deep character customization. As you progress through the game, you'll encounter a key decision: choosing your mastery, or subclass, which defines your endgame playstyle. But what if you pick the wrong one? Can you change mastery in Last Epoch, or are you stuck with your decision?
This question has echoed through the Last Epoch community since launch, and for good reason. For years, mastery was a one-time choice, permanent and irreversible. But thanks to a game-changing Season 2 update, everything has changed.
Let’s dig into everything you need to know about the Last Epoch mastery system, so you can play your way without fear of being locked in forever.
Part 1: What Are Masteries in Last Epoch?
Part 2: Can You Change Mastery in Last Epoch?
Part 3: How to Change Mastery in Last Epoch
Part 4: How to Enjoy a Smooth Gaming Experience in Last Epoch
In Last Epoch, your character begins the journey by choosing from one of five base classes:
Each of these base classes branches into three Masteries, which are specialized subclasses with their own unique passive skill trees and signature abilities. Choosing a Mastery is one of the most impactful decisions you’ll make, as it determines how your character will evolve both mechanically and thematically.
For example:
This question has stirred up plenty of discussions in the Last Epoch community—and for good reason.
Initially, the answer was a hard no. Once you chose your Mastery during the campaign, typically after completing specific story quests, you were locked in for good. This meant that if you wanted to try another Mastery within the same base class, you'd have to start a new character from scratch.
For example, if you picked Bladedancer but later wanted to play as a Falconer, you had no choice but to reroll a new Rogue and go through the campaign again.
This system added a sense of weight to your decision, but it also limited experimentation, which is a core part of any ARPG’s appeal.
Everything changed with the release of Season 2: Tombs of the Erased, which launched on April 17, 2025. One of the standout features introduced in this patch was the long-awaited ability to respec your Mastery.
In Season 2, you can now change your Mastery in Last Epoch even after making your initial choice.
This update allows for far greater flexibility, meaning you’re no longer stuck with a Mastery that doesn’t suit your playstyle. Whether you're trying to optimize your build or simply want to try out a new subclass, the option is finally available.
Now that we know you can change your Mastery in Last Epoch, let’s walk through exactly how to do it.
Step 1. Progress to the End of Time
First, you’ll need to reach the End of Time, the central hub for all things endgame in Last Epoch. This is a mandatory part of the main campaign, so you’ll naturally get there by progressing through the story.
Step 2. Find Chronomancer Lerinne
Once in the End of Time, head to Chronomancer Lerinne, the NPC responsible for all things respec-related. She’s located just south of the waypoint.
Step 3. Select “Respecialize Mastery”
Speak to Lerinne and select the option "Respecialize Mastery." This will bring up a UI menu showing the other two Masteries available for your class.
Step 4. Pay the Gold Cost
Changing your Mastery isn’t free, it comes with a gold cost that scales based on your character’s level. The higher your level and the more passive points you’ve spent, the more gold it’ll cost.
